WOULD LIKE TO MEET: CONCERT & DJ VISUAL/VIDEO DESIGNER

Congregational (2024)

OVERVIEW:

I’m looking to collaborate with a queer video/visual/multimedia artist to create video visuals for my upcoming show Congregational, a choral service for the nightclub - this is a paid gig.

Particularly I am looking for someone who can:

  • Animate text, I’m anticipating there will be sections where lyrics/key messages need to be displayed in creative ways for audiences to read them.

  • Create visuals which give the feeling of being at a gig/concert/arena show (albeit in a smaller space)

  • Draw on the aesthetics of the nightclub and a non-religious spirituality - pulling from mirror balls and lazers, to toilet stalls and grotty basements, as well as stained glass windows.

  • Help create moments that feel trippy, euphoric, or transcendental and take the audience on a journey - I’m quite interested in kaleidoscope moments (we’re considering this for marketing design at the moment). I’d like people to feel like they’re high without having taken anything.

This should be a collaboration - I’m really open to ideas and what your style is.

Visuals will be projected or displayed on a screen behind the performers throughout the show.  You’ll need to produce final video files to be programmed into Qlab. The show is approx 70 minutes long, I’m imagining it will be a mix of fixed length short videos, visual loops, and stills.

We are particularly keen to work with someone who identifies as LGBTQ+, we are actively trans inclusive and would love to meet artists from the global majority

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

Congregational is a newly composed choral service for the nightclub, from artist & vocalist Fatt Butcher. Part concert, part-communionion, part-resurrection, the show is a ceremony for the dance floor; a service to dying nightlife that reminds us to keep on living… and yes, there will be poppers.

Featuring a live choir of professional queer vocalists, complete with superstar DJ Just Soriah and virtuosic piano accompaniment from Nicky Harris, expect a thumping original score of newly composed hymns for the dancefloor blending house, trance, gospel, classical & experimental music.

The project is being written by Fatt Butcher in collaboration with Nicky Harris and Tobre, and produced by SJ Watkinson. This project has been funded by Arts Council England with support from Fierce Festival, Cambridge Junction, B:Music, Marlborough Productions, Brighton Dome, Factory International, Homotopia, and Warwick Arts Centre.

A NOTE ON CONTENT:
As well as exploring music, spirituality, and the dancefloor, this work contains references to sex and sexuality as well as references to drug/alcohol/substance use, it is explicitly and unapologetically queer. If you would not be comfortable creating material in this context then this probably isn’t the project for you.

An initial R&D of the show was shared at Fierce Festival in 2024, highlights from this performance can be seen here:
